3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine β-D-glucuronide sodium salt is a metabolite of glucuronide which functions as a selective inhibitor of HIV-1 replication via suppression of reverse transcriptase. Studies indicate that Efavirenz (sc-207612) can inhibit the formation of 3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine β-D-glucuronide sodium salt from 3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine (sc-203319). Alternate studies demonstrate that 3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine β-D-glucuronide sodium salt can be used as plasma and cellular markers to determine DNA damage in cord blood mononuclear cells that have received NRTIs. It is known that the azido group of 3′-Azido-3′-deoxythymidine β-D-glucuronide sodium salt regularly undergoes reduction to form the amino derivative by human liver microsomes.
