Description
Sudan IV, also called Scarlet red and Fat Ponceau R, is a fat-soluble dye often used for staining triglycerides, lipids and lipoproteins present in cells and tissues. This red β-naphthol diazo dye has the same basic structure as Sudan III with two added methyl groups increasing the deepness and intensity of the stain. Sudan dyes are a group of lipid soluble solvent dyes often called lysochromes. With the use of certain solvents, may also be used to stain some protein bound lipids in paraffin sections. It is less popular than Oil Red O (sc-203749) as it has a more orange shade. Sudan I (sc-215922), Sudan III (sc-203761), and Sudan IV (sc-203762) have been classified as category 3 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
