Description
Silver nitrate binds to selective amino acid residues under weakly acidic or neutral pH conditions making it suitable as a stain for identification of proteins. Silver nitrate is also utilized in the staining of nucleic acids and glycoconjugates in gels. Silver nitrate is a source of silver ions in biological studies, such as in toxicological investigations on yeast and marine animals. This product has been shown to induce the protein conformational condition of amyloid A amyloidosis in mice. Silver nitrate also has powerful germicidal activity. It is far less sensitive to light than the halides.
