Mezerein is a protein kinase C (PKC) activator. Second stage tumor promoter whereas phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) is a first stage tumor promoter. Mezerein may be of use for studying phorbol ester receptor isotypes. Induces interleukin-1α. Coinducer of interferon with phytohemagglutinin.
