Guanidine Thiocyanate is a chaotropic agent used in molecular biology research for the extraction of nucleic acids. Its high efficacy in denaturing proteins makes it particularly valuable in the isolation of RNA, as it helps to inactivate RNases that would otherwise degrade the RNA during the extraction process. Guanidine Thiocyanate is a critical component in the preparation of lysates from cells and tissues where it disrupts cellular structures, thereby releasing RNA into solution. In addition to its role in nucleic acid extraction, this chemical is used to study protein folding and to denature proteins in the study of their primary structure. Furthermore, Guanidine Thiocyanate is used in the creation of density gradients for the purification of nucleic acids, allowing for the separation of RNA from DNA and other cellular components.
