Australine hydrochloride is a polyhydroxylated pyrrolizidine alkaloid that inhibits a-glucosidase, amyloglucosidase, and glucosidase I. Australine hydrochloride appears to be the first glucosidase inhibitor that is active toward glucosidase I but not glucosidase II. Inhibits glycoprotein processing at the gucosidase I step, resulting in the accumulation of glycoproteins containing Glc3Man7-9(GlcNAc)2-oligosaccharides. Does not inhibit alpha- or beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, or alpha- or beta-mannosidase.
