Swainsonine, an indolizidine alkaloid, may act to inhibit the breakdown of glycoprotein by rat liver lysosomes and also suppress MAN2A1 (Golgi mannosidase II). This compound has been reported to be a potent antiproliferative agent via stimulation of lymphocyte proliferation. Additionally, Swainsonine displays the ability to inhibit MAN2B1 (lysosomal alpha-mannosidase) and MAN2C1. Mechanistic studies suggest that this agent can alter carbohydrate processing of beta-galactosidase and beta-glucuronidase.
