Importin α, also known as karyopherin α, is located primarily at the periphery of the nucleus and is involved in nuclear transport. Importin α acts as a receptor to both monopartite and bipartite nuclear localization signals (NLSs), and when in complex with importin β, targets proteins containing NLSs to the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The importin α-importin β complex binds FXFG nucleoporin repeat regions, and also interacts with Ran-GTP. Binding of Ran-GTP to the importin β subunit leads to the dissociation of the complex. Interaction of importin α with Nup2p facilitates the release of NLSs from importin α.
